Rollover for whitewashing ETA

CONTINUE

Yesterday, the Committee on Petitions of the European Parliament gave the Government of Pedro Sánchez a romp by approving a report in which it requests Spain to exhaust all legal channels to recognize the ETA murders as crimes against humanity, so that they cannot prescribe or Submitting has covert amnesties. In addition, the European Parliament reproached Spain for granting prison permits, or benefits such as the systematic approach of terrorists to prisons near their place of origin, without even collaborating with the Justice to clarify almost 400 crimes still under investigation. Yesterday the Socialist Group voted in favor of that report, but it did so not without a dose of cynicism, since it had previously planted amendments to the official text of that Commission with the aim of protecting Pedro Sánchez's policy, as submissive to Bildu as whitewasher from ETA.

The Government's policy in this regard has been clear in these three years of legislature. First, it has yielded to the demands of ETA and its prisoners, as Arnaldo Otegi himself made clear in a private meeting in Sortu, extolling the figure of Pedro Sánchez. Later it has produced a permissive indignation with the tributes and acts of exaltation of released terrorists, and the end of the dispersion policy. Thirdly, there has been a disagreement with the groups of victims of terrorism and the creation of a false historical memory, according to which the disappearance of ETA as an organization of murderers must imply in practice the end of serving the sentences of those same murderers. . And finally, the Government has imposed a 'doctrine of oblivion' allowing these 400 judicial procedures to be left dry dock. If there is a delay in the exemption from repentance as a requirement to be able to be released, the logical thing is that he becomes brave, does not help either the prosecutor or the judges, and sees his ad armed activity legitimized by the mere fact that time has passed. . In the south of France, a Prime Minister such as José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero baptized a terrorist such as Arnaldo Otegi as "a man of peace", and Sánchez has done nothing but magnify that heritage, which is so damaging to the collective memory of the fight against cars -bomb, weapons, kidnappings and extortion.

The European Union is correct in not being an accomplice in the whitewashing of murderers or in that 'doctrine of oblivion'. It is relevant to plant the imprescriptibility of serious offenses that, in fact, will be taken into account as crimes against humanity. The guarantee of a rule of law and of creating reinsertion as a supreme value in a democracy cannot be at odds with a full and effective execution of sentences, something constitutionally guaranteed. If Sánchez needs Bildu's votes, it cannot be at the expense of the memory of the dead, some of them socialist militants. It is not unfair that unrepentant terrorists serve their sentences. What is unfair is to pervert reality to victimize these criminals and present them as hostages of inquisitive and inclement courts. The European Parliament traveled to the Basque Country and Madrid in 2021 and analyzed what was happening with a very humiliating institutional make-up of ETA. Now the PSOE must bear all its incoherence and contradictions, with its opportunistic 'forgetfulness' and, above all, with its abandonment to the victims. His rectification yesterday was just an unbelievable pose. What is credible are the facts, and with them Sánchez has portrayed himself.
