The Community of Madrid is preparing to face a heat wave that could raise temperatures up to 33 degrees in some areas of the capital. To do this, it has launched the crash plan for episodes of high temperatures, which seeks to protect the most vulnerable population, such as the elderly and the chronically ill.

This plan contemplated a series of precautionary measures due to the abnormally high temperatures that tend to be experienced in Madrid, which in some cases will reach 15 degrees above normal.

  • Schools: Adapt school hours based on the weather forecast, in addition to implementing the possibility of holding classes outdoors and the installation of only portable refrigerators in 31 public nursery schools and promoting the installation of sun protection elements.

  • Public transport: The frequency of the metro will increase and there will be temperatures inside the carriages, buses and interchanges between 21ºC and 26ºC.

  • Swimming pools: The opening of all swimming pools in the Community of Madrid will be brought forward to May 13 and will remain open until September 9.

  • Health centers: Reinforcement of the staff and training of emergency personnel in matters of health problems derived from extreme heat. Also for temperature control.

  • Fire campaign: The Civil Protection Plan against Forest Fires of the Community of Madrid (INFOMA) will add the date of incorporation of the reinforcements from the month of May, both by air and land means, to guarantee their full use from the 15th of Junior .

The plan will presumably be presented at the Governing Council on Wednesday, April 26, and will test the creation of an Interdepartmental Commission that will monitor it from May 15 to September 15.

In short, it is important to highlight that the shock plan for episodes of high temperatures that the Community of Madrid will suffer in the coming weeks is a necessary measure to protect the health of the population when it comes to preventing possible problems derived from high temperatures. temperatures temperatures. And, in this line, we recommend that the population keep hydrated, avoid exposure to the sun in the hours of greatest radiation, wear light clothing and protect the head with hats or caps.
