The night after the death of her only daughter, Desirée Leal's mother "slept soundly." We revealed it this Tuesday in the second session of the trial for the crime of the little girl, the defendant's boyfriend, who spent that night at her bedside in the psychiatric ward of the Lugo Hospital. There, he confessed, Ana Sandamil told him "let it all be over" and asked him "if she was the one who had killed her." The mental state of the accused in the days surrounding the death of the minor focused a good part of the day, with a dozen witnesses who helped outline how the woman was before, hanging and after the events.

About the previous weeks, everyone agreed that his way of being had changed drastically, which had his mother very worried, who even "looked for a psychiatrist in Coruña". “I noticed that it was not her. She got up at night, opened the window and stuck her head out of it, drank a lot of coffee, she said that she heard noises...». Other witnesses, from her family circle, described a woman "depressed", "more obsessed with things" and "nervous". But, they insisted, nothing that foreshadowed that this "exemplary mother" might want to attempt against the life of the seven-year-old girl. An aunt of the judged is included, recognized that her mother told her that she "had to close the door of the room to sleep."

The description of how Sandamil is found minutes after the discovery of his daughter's body was made by the health technicians who went to the house to try to help the minor, and also the doctor and the nurse mobilized when the defendant took a blister of pills “When we arrived, she was dressed up, sitting on the sofa, and responded to our words correctly. She even knew how to tell us her ID and health card number without any problem, something that not many people know, ”said the locker waiting for her. The doctor confirmed her word: "She was fully conscious at that time, she presented completely normal psychological traits and a maximum level of consciousness."

After her hospital intervention, which included a trip to an ambulance in which she was more “collaborative” and fully oriented, Sandamil began to receive visits from her relatives. Yesterday they described a person gone at times, who "was not believed that her daughter was dead." So much so, her uncle said yesterday of her in Sala, that her father “asked him to take a picture of the girl in the whole to see her dead because since he couldn't go to the whole, to see her. She did not believe that she was dead”. Her wife, also Sandamil's aunt, delved into the same idea: “She insisted on she wanted to go to the whole of the girl and that her father take pictures of her because she did not believe that she was dead. She said to find out what was in the bottles. She was in love with that girl”, she declared before the popular jury in charge of determining the participation of her mother in the crime and if she acted under a psychotic outbreak, or not.

One of the key interventions to discover whether the accused will be aware of what she was doing or not was that of her other uncle, a rancher with whom she worked taking care of the farm's accounting. To questions from the complaints and the defense, the man clarified that the searches for poison that are attributed to the mother in the days before the crime could be carried out by him, that "when it rained" he took Sandamil's tablet to look for "things related to the field”, the case of strychnine, a poison for rodents that is prohibited “but you can ask about it, even if it is not to buy it,” the witness clarified. At this point in his statement, the judge took the floor to disgust for the first and last time in the development of the session. He wanted to know if the man knew the key to the device, to which he replied negatively, and if along with that search for poison it would compromise other more: “I guess so”, he doubted.
