fifth generation more technological and electrified

The Sportage accounts for 18% of Kia's sales in Spain. With the aim of stabilizing as a bestseller, the brand has just presented the fifth generation of the model, with a completely new aesthetic and with a great commitment to electrification. The model combined a sleek and muscular exterior design with an avant-garde interior, featuring an integrated curved screen that houses the latest connectivity technologies.

With the diesel, gasoline and hybrid variants and Mild Hybrid (now on sale), maximum efficiency will be with the plug-in hybrid, expected for May, with the DGT's 'Zero' achievement and environmental badge. The diesel engine can also be combined with Mil Hybrid technology, further reducing emissions and fuel consumption.

During the contact we have been able to verify the behavior of the Mild Hybrid and gasoline hybrid versions. in both cases they are powered by the 1.6-liter T-GDI engine.

In the hybrid version, it is combined with an electric traction motor with permanent motors and 44,2 kW (60 hp) of power, plus a lithium-ion polymer battery with a capacity of 1,49 kWh. This results in a total system power of 230 hp. With a very quiet drive, the power is always disputed when it comes to stepping on the accelerator. The batteries, located under the seats in the rear seats, are very effective on urban routes, where the electric motor's contribution to saving fuel and reducing emissions can be more compromised.

If it is repossessed, for road and motorway trips, the lower weight of the electric group makes the Mild hybrid version much more efficient. In this case, the Kia uses the same combustion engine, but in our test the average consumption did not exceed 6 liters on average, with the 180 hp engine, compared to 7.4 on average with its conventional hybrid brother. In any case, the figures obtained during the contact of the vehicle, and those not homologated, are treated.

Also included in the launch range of the new Sportage in Spain is a 1,6-litre diesel engine, available with 115 hp or 136 hp of power. Thanks to mild hybrid technology, the 136 PS diesel variant reduces emissions and fuel consumption to less than 5 l/100 km.

In the case of the Sportage Plug-in Hybrid, which will be made available to Spanish dealers from May, the 1,6-litre turbocharged diesel engine is completed by a 66,9 kW (91 hp) permanent magnet electric drive motor. ) of power, including a lithium-ion polymer battery with 13,8 kWh capacity. Combined, they offer a total system output of 265PS, with 180PS coming from the T-GDI engine.

The new Sportage can be equipped with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox (7DCT). Also available is a six-speed manual (MT) and, exclusively for MHEV versions, the 6-speed Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT). Both the Sportage Hybrid and Sportage Plug-in Hybrid are equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission (6AT)

Terrain mode

A first in the Sportage is the conception of the Terrain Mode, which debuts in the fifth generation of the Sportage. Developed for drivers who want adventure and leisure activities in the great outdoors, Terrain mode automatically adjusts the Sportage's settings for optimum dynamic ride in any terrain and environment conditions. The all-wheel drive system (available depending on version) is electronically controlled to optimally distribute power between the front and rear lanes, depending on road conditions and driving situations.

Also new is the Electronically Controlled Suspension (ECS), which makes the vehicle react quickly to the Sportage's body and steering movements, with quick damping adjustments that counteract pitch and roll when cornering. It also reduces the effect of wheel bounces.

technological interior

Inside the new Sportage, the quality of materials and finishes stands out, along with a large space available for the occupants of both the front and rear seats. The Sportage offers 996mm of running board clearance for the side steps (955mm on the PHEV version), though headroom on the side will be 998mm. The trunk capacity reaches 591 l.

On the dashboard there will be an integrated curved screen and a touch screen panel, as well as sports air vents.

The 12,3-inch (31 cm) touch screen technology and integrated controller act as the nerve center for the driver and passenger to control features for connectivity, functionality and usability. Both systems have been created to be easy to use, highly intuitive and smooth to the touch. The 12,3-inch (31 cm) instrument cluster is equipped with a state-of-the-art TFT liquid crystal display, which generates precise and clear graphics.
