A councilor from Elche denounces a homophobic aggression for going hand in hand with her husband: "Being deviant"

The Councilor for Equality of the Elche City Council, Mariano Valera, has denounced on his social networks the homophobic attack suffered by the Paseo de Santa Pola while walking with her husband holding hands.

According to his own account of the events, “suddenly, two young people between 18 and 20 years old on a bicycle, wearing their helmets, facing us, we looking so that we could pass with the bicycle, we crossed eyes, they look at us and yell: 'deviates'. Ours have been perplexed and we have not known what to say or what to do, simply, we have looked and the situation has made us very sad, "said the socialist councilor.

“I felt like running dirty so I could get to them and call the police to report a hate crime, but they were on their bikes and it was impossible to do it.

He decided to report it here (social networks). Extremely sad and sad. I feel anger, a lot of anger, for what has happened to me and for what is happening and continues to happen, ”says the socialist councilor of the Elche City Council.

Mariano Valera has been very affected after the incident: “And they are still questioning why there are days of vindication, why we have to continue going out into the street. I live an attack in the first person, and it is only the tip of the iceberg, I want to express the pain and suffering generated by hatred. Because the crime cannot be love, the crime is hate”, he affirms.

Finally, the socialist councilor has made it clear that this episode is not going to repress him in public: "We are going to continue holding hands and we are going to continue stating that we want to live in a society free of hate, diverse and egalitarian."

After publicly denouncing the events, the mayor of Equality of the Elche City Council has received numerous expressions of support.
