The decision of Sweden and Finland to break with their long tradition of neutrality, which in truth was more aesthetic than real, and the formalization of their integration into NATO represents the most important qualitative change that has occurred in the Alliance in a long time. . There is no doubt about the fact that it was the Russian invasion of Ukraine that has led these two countries to speed up this provision, in search of an effective military umbrella that is robust enough to serve as protection against any temptation that Vladimir Putin might have to launch an attack in the Baltic area. Although the two countries are already linked to the clause of mutual protection within the EU, the essential factor of their interest in joining NATO is the fact that the United States is also part of the Alliance and all that its military power means. as a deterrent.
From the Kremlin, more or less clean threats have been launched against the entry of these two countries into NATO, so there is wrongly an expansionist policy and aggression against their interests. The proof that they are completely wrong is that both Sweden and Finland - which has a long border with Russia - had assumed this indefinite status even in the worst moments of the cold war and even exercised some well-intentioned mediation role. It has been the decision of the Russian autocrat to chain a cruel military operation against an independent country like Ukraine that has changed the opinion of the Swedes and Finns in favor of its full integration into the Alliance. It cannot be interpreted in any way as a hostile move towards Russia but rather as a protection measure against the real threat that the Russian regime currently represents. In this sense, we must know that the decision that the dreams and the Finns are about to make also involves us Spaniards as members of the Alliance, since in the event that any of these countries were not part of the agreement, we should react as if we had been we attacked them.
The fact that this integration is going to take place quickly poses a certain political dilemma regarding the position that the same alliance holds in the face of the desperate calls for help from Ukraine, which is the country that has really been attacked and which does not yet have a near horizon. the organization. However, knowing that NATO is mainly a dissuasive mechanism, it is thought that to avoid a confrontation, not so much to take part in a conflict that has already begun. This is also the reason why Putin has decided to launch an attack on the criminal operation against Ukraine, before this country can establish ties with NATO. However, none of this prevents us from continuing to help the Ukrainians by all possible means in the noble defense of their country.
