The Platform of People Affected by Mortgages (PAH) is a Spanish-based organization that carries out direct actions to stop evictions and campaigns for the right to housing. The PAH was created in Barcelona in February 2009 and in 2017 it had 220 local branches throughout Spain. It was created in response to the 2008 financial crisis that triggered the bursting of the Spanish real estate bubble and resists evictions due to foreclosures.

The group aimed to protest and fight against the foreclosures that were evicting people from their homes. It is organized horizontally by assembly and grew exponentially throughout Spain, with 220 local groups registered in 2017[1]. The group organizes nonviolent resistance to evictions and campaigns for social rent and more aid for people who cannot pay their mortgages. The PAH had managed to stop more than 2.000 evictions in 2016[1].

Basically the objective of this eviction was to finish emptying this property, which is owned by an Israeli investment fund that bought it a few years ago in a very touristy neighborhood of Barcelona, near the Sagrada Familia. And what this fund wants to do is what we have been seeing for the last few years in Barcelona, which is to empty buildings, do some renovations and then rent or sell apartments to tourists or to people who have the possibility of paying high rents and/or eventually buy it at a higher price - speculating on real estate.

The Platform of People Affected by Mortgages (PAH acronym) is a national organization. It is a general movement for the right to a vital space and against debts for life here in the Spanish State. The organization began in 2009, a year after the international crisis that began in the United States in 2007 reached Spain with the bursting of the subprime mortgage bubble. After being created in 2009, the Platform expanded in 2011 when there was a civil protest that the press called "Los Indignados", but which called itself 15M because it was born on May 15, 2011. The Platform expanded with the 15M movement and through of one of his campaigns called "Stop Evictions", which was against the evictions that occurred to those who had lifelong debts in their homes. This campaign popularized the Platform and after connecting with an assembly-type movement like 15M, the Platform also adopted a radically assembly-based and democratic form. Without the existence of the 15M movement, it would never have taken this form.
