The Council of Ministers resolved yesterday the creation of a Mutual Savings Fund for Public Employees with effect from March 2020, in which the Government will contribute 100 million dollars as initial capital of the fund, among other proposals to improve the welfare of your employees. The fund will be financed through the deduction of 2,5% of the total remuneration of each official.
The Council of Ministers has also resolved to create garrison shops so that members of the defense forces who benefit from the GEMS Fund can access subsidized basic products. Contrary to other reports, this does not mean that the GEMS will finance the stores, although the two are interlinked insofar as they seek to ultimately upgrade and cushion all government employees from the current short-term challenges.
Treasury sources told FinX that while the Government pension scheme that has already been put in place would go a long way in providing financial security for civil servants upon retirement, it does not meet the immediate urgent needs of civil servants, who they need access to short-term financial products.
